an Embryo
Who are you?
Hello! My name is Emby for short. Scientist call me an Embryo. Most parents prefer to call me "Baby"
How were you formed?
I wasformed when my father's sperm fertilised my mother's egg. All of us began life that way - and that includes YOU!
What do they do to you in embryonic stem cell research?
They wait till I'm about 4 to 5 days old, when I develop some special cells in the part of me celled the inner cell mass. They want these cells for research.
What happens to you then?
When they take these cells out of me, I die. Pretty much like taking your heart out of your body. They claim it doesn't hurt me 'cos I've not developed my nerves yet, but it definitely kills me!
Why do they want your cells?
Thay say that these cells can give rise to other type of cells that can treat some diseases, like nerve, heart and pancreatic cells.
Don't you think it is good to look for ways to cure diseases?
Sure it's good! But the end cannot justify the means ... I mean, how would you feel if they said that to cure someone else, you've got to die first so that they can get your body parts to help them?
What is therapeutic cloning?
This is where they create me by taking a cell from a person and manipulate it to become an embryo like me. But the end is pretty much the same. They will kill me in the same way for the same reasons.
Can they get these cells without killing you?
Sure they can! A lot of reasearchers have shown that they can obtain cells from other parts of the human body like the bone marrpw and umbilical cor, and make these cells become other cells like heart cells, nerve cells and so on. This way, no one gets killed. I sure wish they'll concentrate more on getting stem cells from these sources.

The human body is shaped beginning at the moment of conception/fertilization
OXFORD, UK, July 9, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Richard Gardner, an embryologist at the University of Oxford, UK, has repeated little known experiments first conducted in the 1980s in Flushing, New York by Jean Smith of Queen's College which demonstrate that the human body is shaped beginning at the moment of conception/fertilization.
Which side of the microscopic embryo will form the back and head, are not left to later development as has been believed by embryologists, but are set out in the minutes and hours after the sperm and egg unite to form a new human being. Read Article
